The new Argentina coach believes the Barcelona star, who he will visit to discuss his international future next week, was isolated in the Copa America final against Chile
New Argentina coach Edgardo Bauza has pointed to tactical deficiencies under his predecessor Gerardo Martino as the reason for Lionel Messi's struggles at the Copa America.
The Barcelona star announced his retirement from international football following his country's second defeat in the final of the South American competition in two years.
Messi was closely marked by Chile in the match in New Jersey and Bauza does not believe Argentina's system provided him with the support he needs to thrive.
"If you leave [Messi] alone, we see what happened against Chile, where he had four players on top of him," Bauza told TyC Sports.
"He suffered a lot in that game, and he had problems in generating play. The idea is that the play goes through him, we know how he can change a game.
