Jose Mourinho has given a very interesting interview with Portuguese media Sport TV, which will air tomorrow.
Sneak previews have already been leaked, and these quotes on Renato Sanches are particularly interesting.
The new Manchester United boss professes his admiration for his fellow countryman, who signed for Benfica this summer, and who won Euro 2016 with Portugal.
Mourinho came late, United missed the boat
In fact, Mourinho admires Sanches so much that he would have loved to sign the young attacker.
United were heavily linked with the Benfica youth product, but Bayern eventually won the battle for the starlet, and United fans were left to wonder why.
Well, maybe now we know.
Mourinho says that by the time he arrived, it was too late to make a serious move for Sanches, because Bayern had already made so much progress on that front.
And with so much chaos going on in the final Van Gaal days, Ed Woodward can’t have had much time to work on signings:
“I arrived late. I signed in May, we started talking a week before, but completely out of the process. If I had arrived earlier, I’d fight for him.
“Manchester United watched Renato many times and maybe I did it even more. In so much time at home, I watched many Benfica and Portuguese league games, I got to know the boy better with time.
“He’s in a a big club, in a league where he’ll certainly be the champion. The club have players of very high level which belong to the structure, a little like Benfica.”
