After our first significant taster of midweek football, all eyes
return to the Premier League again as we strap ourselves in for another
full fixture list.
Manchester United – and Wayne Rooney – recovered from last week’s
disappointment of failing to break down the Geordie wall at Old Trafford
with an emphatic 4-0 win against Club Brugge to confirm their return
into Europe’s elite competition.
The end of the transfer window is likely to dominate the post-match
press conferences on Saturday evening as much as talk of the games, with
drained supporters looking forward to the end of the speculation.
Moving on, here are seven things you will definitely see this weekend:
1. A Geordie siege
‘Benzema, Cavani, Kokorin! ANYONE!’
Arsenal fans are begging for a new striker to solve the goalscoring
woes that have got their season off to a stuttering start but they won’t
be seeing a new face at St James’ Park tomorrow lunch time.
In stark contrast, Steve McClaren has brought with him a magic potion
to stop the league’s best strikers from being able to score against
them. Tim Krul performed heroics between the sticks against Manchester
United last week and you can be sure he’ll need more of Schteve’s
special potion against the Gunners.
2. Can we see that again?
‘To look at a video for 20 seconds would maybe have changed the
outcome of the game, we can take a leaf out of rugby’s book. They do it
really well.’
Words from Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey after seeing his goal
controversially chalked off against Liverpool for offside, a sentiment
that his gaffer Arsene Wenger later echoed.
So, with that in mind, expect Alan Shearer and the Match of the Day
gang to follow suit when we get yet another dodgy decision this weekend.
3. The capital bromance
Handsome Pards combined with the suave persona of Jose Mourinho,
what’s not to like? You will, without doubt, see lots of hugging and
back patting before kick-off… not sure it will be the same come the
final whistle, mind.
4. A dazzling Son beam
Spurs’ latest recruit Heung-min Son will be hoping to make it into
the first team squad for their home tie against Everton on Saturday
afternoon. But, if he doesn’t you can be sure to see a smiley waving
Korean at half time at White Hart Lane. Spurs fans will get the chance
to cheer on a player they know nothing about except that he costs a
fortune. That’ll be fun.
If you actually know little about the South Korean, this handy guide should sort you out.
5. Too early for a 6-pointer?
Bit harsh? Maybe.
But be honest, nobody is looking forward to tuning into Match of the
Day on Saturday night to watch Villa vs Sunderland, are they? Either way
it will finish 6-6 or 0-0, I think we all know which way it’s going.
6. Confidence is key
Anfield’s the setting for a tale of two Premier League sides at the
opposite ends of the spectrum. One side with supreme attacking
confidence, the other with a backline dodgier than Jack Grealish’s
barnet.
You can be sure of seeing Slaven Bilic slumped on the bench biting
his nails while Brendan Rodgers pulls out his signature celebration,
great character.
7. All hail the Monk
With recent question marks about the future of current England boss
Roy Hodgson it begs the question: who would do any better with a
relatively below par squad?
Given the incredible job Garry Monk is doing at Swansea, don’t be
surprised to see his name mentioned in the same breath as the very top
European jobs this weekend.
Why? Because the Swans take on Manchester United who have been on
their jollies in Brugge this week and Monk’s Swansea disciples will be
pumped up for a scalping.
