The 29-year-old Spaniard is a target for Louis van Gaal's side and the Red Devils are using Madrid's interest in David De Gea as leverage to sign the World Cup winner.
Smalling, 25, enjoyed his best season to date at Old Trafford last season and was Van Gaal's first choice centre-back by the end of the season.
However, though Ramos' arrival would threaten Smalling's place in the side, the England defender welcomes the competition.
'I think it's a case of where at Manchester United there's always competition,' said Smalling.
'Even when I signed, there were five centre-backs who I had to work hard to get past.
'I always knew I was going to be compared against the best because United can always challenge for the best and I'm up for that challenge.
