England manager Roy Hodgson has named Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford in his provisional 26-man squad for Euro 2016.
Rashord has burst onto the scene this season after scoring seven goals in 16 appearances for the Red Devils – but the 18-year-old’s inclusion is a massive shock.
A 23-man squad was due to be named last Thursday but the announcement was delayed so the Three Lions boss could make his assessment following the final round of matches in the Premier League.
A long-term injury to Danny Welbeck had already disrupted Hodgson’s plans going into the tournament in France, after the Arsenal forward was ruled out for nine months.
Welbeck’s injury perhaps opened the door for Rashford, but the youngster still had to beat the likes of Jermain Defoe, Andy Carroll and Theo Walcott to a spot.
Newcastle United winger Andros Townsend, Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere and Manchester City star Fabian Delph have also made the squad ahead of England’s friendlies.
England, captained by Wayne Rooney, will face Russia in their first match at the Euros on June 11.
Hodgson has three warm-up matches – against Turkey, Australia and Portugal – to decide who will be starting at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille.
