Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal was “very pleased” following Ander Herrera’s performance against Club Brugge last night, as per ESPN FC.
The 26-year-old made his first start of the new season in the second leg of the Red Devils’ Champions League qualifier and the Spaniard struggled in the opening 45 minutes as he picked up a yellow card and was sloppy in possession.
However, Van Gaal was left
very impressed by his performance later in the game as Herrera wrapped
up the result with a late goal in the 4-0 win.
“He started not so good,” said Van Gaal. “He had a lot of ball losses and also a yellow card, so at that moment I wanted to change him, but then I saw he was coming back.
“And after that moment he plays a good match on the ‘double six’ position, but later on at 10 he was better. So I’m very pleased also for him.”
The victory secured United’s place in the Champions League group stages with a 7-1 win on aggregate over Club Brugge.
Wayne Rooney scored for the first time in 10 matches as he grabbed his first hat-trick in European competition since 2004 which coincided with his debut for the Red Devils.

Herrera then sealed the win
later on after being moved up into the number 10 position following
Adnan Januzaj’s substitution for Bastian Schweinsteiger at half-time.
The German came on in place of the inexperienced Belgian and strengthened United’s midfield superbly, composing those around him and ensuring no comeback was on the cards from the Belgian side.
He’ll now head in the group stages of the Champions League with a side other than Bayern Munich for the first time in his career.
