According to AS, via the Express, the Liga BBVA giants were keen on acquiring the 33-year-old as a potential backup to current number one Diego Alves.
However, the stopper has rejected the opportunity to return to Spain, although it remains to be seen whether he is prepared to 'sit it out' at Old Trafford, or if he will seek a move away from Old Trafford.
The former Barcelona and Spain goalkeeper signed for the Red Devils in January 2015, having left his contract at the Nou Camp six months previously.
Valdes arrived at Old Trafford as a hugely experienced and decorated campaigner, having won the World Cup, two European Cups, six Liga BBVA titles and three Champions League honours.
However, he failed to unseat David De Gea, and managed only two league outings, both at the tail end of the campaign.
Valdes's decision to remain at United may indicate that he is hopeful of securing a spot in van Gaal's first-team next season.
