As Arsenal get close to sealing the deal to bring Petr Cech across London to the fury of Jose Mourinho (yay!) many fans have decided that the goalkeeper could make his competitive debut in the Community Shield final against Chelsea at Wembley.
The traditional curtain raiser to the season will see the league champions face off against the FA Cup kings and it is the chance, once again, for Arsene Wenger to finally get the better of Mourinho who is a manager we all know the Arsenal boss has never managed to defeat.
Cech seems to be coming to the club as the new number one and, with time on his side, Wojciech Szczesny will be handed the chance to resurrect his stalled career and learn from one of the best in the game. In such a role, he is likely to see himself stay as the cup keeper fornext season unless Cech picks up an injury. This is Arsenal, let’s not pretend that that isn’t a very real possibility.

Wojciech Szczesny will probably start at Wembley (Piture: Getty Images)[/caption]In that vein, it is also likely that we will see Szczesny handed a start at Wembley and, given he was the keeper for the final, it would seem right that he would be handed the chance to pick up another medal.
Last season we didn’t get the opportunity to see whom Wenger would pick to play. The Cup final keeper, Lukasz Fabianski, had left for pastures new and David Ospina arrived with a thigh injury which kept him out of action. Wenger had no choice but to play Szczesny with Emi Martinez taking the spot on the bench.
I’d love to see Cech lineup against Mourinho’s men, if for no other reason than to simply annoy him. But I’m happy enough with Woj being handed the shirt for the showpiece game.
Whatever happens, it’s a real chance for Arsenal to throw down a marker like they did last season against the then-champions Manchester City. If they can avoid another injury crisis as soon as the season-proper gets underway, then Cech will have more than enough opportunities to annoy Mourinho on a weekly basis.
I can’t wait.
