Lionel Messi won his 100th cap for Argentina in Saturday’s Copa America Group B encounter with Jamaica.
The 27-year-old made his official debut for the senior national team in August 2005 in a 2-1 win over Hungary, with the attacker controversially being sent off just two minutes after coming off the bench.
His first goal for Argentina followed in the 3-2 friendly defeat against Croatia in March 2006.
Messi has featured in three World Cups so far in his career, scoring nine goals in 15 appearances in total and guiding his country to the final at last summer’s tournament in Brazil.
Additionally, the Barcelona ace has represented Argentina at three different Copa America tournaments, including this summer’s edition in Chile.
The forward, who turns 28 on Wednesday, currently sits second in his country’s all-time top goal-scoring charts with 46 goals, trailing Gabriel Batistuta by 10 strikes.
Messi is the fifth Argentine in history to reach 100 caps, with Javier Zanetti (145), Roberto Ayala (115), Javier Mascherano (114) and Diego Simeone (106) preceding him.
